A wonderful summers’ weekend in Germany, with the temperature around the 30deg Celsius mark, did not only lay the foundation for hot racing, but the Ahnatal BMX track was in fantastic condition and in perfect race shape.

The Saturdays racing saw only Challenge class races. Sunday was the day for the Championship classes to earn points in the UCI C1 category event towards their Olympic qualification for Rio 2016.

With that, only Axel raced on the Saturday. The field was stacked with all the top riders from Holland and Belgium, as well as a full host of German riders.

Axel managed through his motos with reasonable ease and pulled out wins in both the ¼’s and semi’s. With a great snap on the gate, he took the lead on the current European Champion in the older class, Justin Kimmann. A “Kamikaze” move in the last corner by Kimmann, saw the two riders make contact, taking them both off the track, leaving Axel out on the grass, and coming home 8th.

Sunday dawned, and the heat was still on. All the top Elites were there, from Holland, Belgium, Germany, Latvia, Australia, Czech Rep., France, making it a fully international field.

Once again, Axel managed to dominate his motos, and the qualifiers, making it safely into the finals. A late start saw him battling in the pack, and he had to fight his way through on the first straight into second behind Kimmann. The tension rose as the two riders neared the last corner, raising the crowd to their feet. No silly moves by Axel, and he brought home the 2nd for the day.

For Liam the day started off by hitting the gate, then unclipping on the first straight. He managed to fight his way back to 6th, leaving a chance at qualifying to the next round open. A good second and third moto saw him race into 2nd and 2st respectively, getting him into the semifinals. A good start had him fighting in the middle of the pack, and with contact in the first straight, his momentum was lost, and he was left fighting to survive. Unfortunately he did not qualify through to the finals.
